the stength and magnitude of an earthquake is measured by a richture scale and is numbered from 1 to 10. in san francisco earthquakes happen every day but only measure 1 or 2 on the richture scale so people dont feel them.
after an earthquake aftershocks can cause more damage than the earthquake itself this is because biuldings are weakened by the earthquake and are vary vulnerable. also unsespecting people feel that it is safe to come out into the open and there for can be crushed from falling glass and parts from biuldings

the epicentre is the point directly above the focus on the earths surface.
seismic waves are energy wave that are released from the focus. the strongest energy waves are closest to the focus.
